The exhibition
“Counterpoint in Grey” features the most recent group of abstract
paintings to emerge from the studio of Lila Lewis Irving. Richly
expressive, they are linked by the use of grey as a starting point for
a wonderfully controlled and subtle exploration of colour. The idea of
working with a reduced palette began in a conversation with the
American abstractionist Helen Frankenthaler, who suggested that “grey
is a beautiful colour” on its own. The series of paintings in the
exhibition demonstrate what a master colourist can accomplish using a
whisper rather than a shout, and illustrate the intensely personal and
emotional approach to painting which has become a hallmark of Ms.
Irving’s work.
Lila Lewis Irving
